Find out the difference between an ultrabook and a notebook. Learn the basic differences and characteristics of these two solutions.

The era of portable computers began with the laptop. As the number of technological solutions and user requirements increased, new types appeared, such as notebook and ultrabook.

What are the characteristics of laptops?

The portable computer, initially called a laptop, completely revolutionized the computer market: it introduced new solutions that made it possible to use your own equipment anywhere. A laptop, first of all, was definitely different in size compared to a standard personal computer. You could put it in a handy bag and carry it anywhere you could comfortably use it. Additionally, mobile internet made remote work possible and much more accessible. This is especially convenient and much-needed in times like these when there is a pandemic and due to strictures, people should not congregate or even meet at work if conditions permit

Notebook, or the next generation

The first laptops were quite massive and also fairly heavy, so they could pose quite a few problems when traveling. The extra few pounds made them a heavy burden as luggage. Subsequent years of technological advancement meant that emerging versions of laptops could be smaller and lighter. The standard, heavy laptop has been replaced by a notebook computer with limited dimensions. This makes it possible to tuck it into a briefcase and move around with it freely. The notebook, apart from its size, is not really different from a classic laptop, so the names became interchangeable over time. Subsequent modifications of portable computers led to the creation of the next generation of laptops called ultrabooks.

Ultrabook

The next generation of laptops premiered in 2011 at Computex, where Intel unveiled a familiar-looking laptop under a new name – the ultrabook. It was distinguished primarily by its appearance, as well as by its low weight, which did not exceed 1 kilogram. The thickness of the device itself should not exceed 21 mm. The big advantage is exceptional mobility, which is at a much higher level than in the case of classic notebooks. The new devices can work for a very long time, using only a battery as a power source. Ultrabook is a tool that was presented having in mind first of all people who like to travel and work in remote mode. It can be used away from the power source, where quite often there is a problem with charging the equipment. Another advantage of these devices concerns the speed of booting up. Most ultrabooks can boot the operating system in a few seconds. With SSDs, all operations will happen much faster. This is because they do not contain moving parts, thanks to which they can work several dozen times faster than classic HDDs. An SSD is also definitely quieter than a standard HDD

The basic differences

A notebook differs from an ultrabook primarily in size and weight. The former is heavier and larger. The former is heavier and larger, and is equipped with a much lower quality battery that can work for a few hours at most without recharging. In the case of an ultrabook, the battery life without an additional power source can be up to ten hours. Another element that distinguishes the two devices is their speed. An ultrabook is much faster, as its operating system can boot up in a few seconds. The fastest devices boot up in two seconds. Notebooks often run the operating system in a dozen or so seconds, and older models even in several dozen seconds.

Ultrabooks are equipped with fast SSDs based on flash technology, thanks to which the system can perform many more operations than when using a standard HDD. Notebooks, especially older ones, are equipped with a CD-ROM drive. Ultrabooks lack a CD-ROM drive, but this is not such a big problem as CDs are used less and less often as data carriers. Flash drives, such as USB flash drives, are much more convenient and capacious

A notebook, as opposed to an ultrabook, is much better suited to work at home or in the office. Its screen is bigger and its storage capacity is much larger. An ultrabook, on the other hand, is a great solution when you’re working on the road and access to a power source is limited. It’s much better made and more durable, and the speed is at a much better level. Although an ultrabook costs much more than a notebook, it’s worth considering when choosing your next laptop.
